5:18Now PlayingIt’s Mental Health Awareness month, and one major issue is imposter syndrome and especially imposter syndrome at work. How can we be more confident in our decisions in the office, and be more confident at work? Let’s talk to an expert.

Today, Philip Michael sits down with Melody Wilding, an expert in human behavior. She says that people tend to overthink at the office. Today, she gives us techniques to help us slow down and teaches us how to be more confident at work.
According to Wilding, overthinking is particularly common with someone who is both overachieving and highly sensitive. This typically happens to people who think about everything more deeply, while also putting intense pressure on themselves to succeed.
And this can lead to burnout? Yes! Burnout is both mental and emotional exhaustion. Overthinking will waste valuable time and energy you could be spending elsewhere. This will then lead you to be more pessimistic and less engaged in your work overall, and those are burnout symptoms.
Some advice? Wilding says to use the 10-10-10 test. This is asking yourself “Is what I’m worried about going to matter 10 weeks, 10 months, or 10 years from now?” So often we find ourselves having anxiety that might not even matter in the long term.
Wilding also recommends creating creative constraints. Overthinking expands only to the time that we allow it. So use accountability and structure to your advantage. Tell your boss that you’ll have a deliverable by EOD or a certain time, so you can’t add on to the anxiety and overthink or overdo it. That puts parameters around your thinking so you don’t get carried away.
