If you can vote, join the army, and take out loans at 18, but you can’t drink? South Carolina Minority House Leader, Todd Rutherford thinks that you should be allowed to drink at 18. The state is pushing to change the legal age limit for drinking to 18. Rutherford says, “It’s time we stop criminalizing behavior we know they’re going to engage in. If a child can go to war and enter into traumatic toxic debt trying to go to college, then they should be allowed to have a beer or glass of wine.”
The bill will only permit 18-year-olds to consume beer and wine and the state would still reserve liquor for those 21 and up. Rutherford hopes that this change will promote safer drinking habits among younger generations.
