The ability to walk somewhere you need to go has various advantages, yet few people consider this when deciding where to live. Cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Boston are totally walkable, allowing residents to save money, live better lives, and contribute to environmental protection.
You probably don't need a car if you can walk everywhere. If you don't have to pay for a car, you'll save around $7,000 each year on average. Sure, you'll have to pay for buses and trains now, but once you factor in the cost of a parking spot, gas, and tolls to go into the city, the prices are unlikely to stack up.
Walking around has health benefits as well. If you wish to leave your house in a walkable city, you have no choice except to walk. Regular brisk walking, according to the Mayo Clinic, can help you shed body fat, enhance energy, and prevent diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It can also help to boost your immune system.
When you walk or take public transportation, you are also helping the environment. Cars account for more than half of all transportation emissions, according to the Climate Reality Project. Taking a car off the road and replacing it with walking is a good way to help the environment.
