Instead of giving it a cool name like the Thunderdome or the Lava Pit, most stadiums strike a naming rights deal with a business partner. These names have changed throughout the years as the new economy has taken hold. So, how have things like cryptocurrency, student loans, and legalized gambling influenced the names of our stadiums?
Cryptocurrency is one of the most significant financial influencers on this generation. Crypto, from Bitcoin to Shiba Inu to stablecoins, is turning many people into millionaires.
The Miami Heat were the first team to add a crypto naming rights sponsor. They announced the naming rights arrangement in early April 2021, which would change the name of their arena from American Airlines Arena to FTX Arena. FTX is a cryptocurrency exchange platform that operates online.
Since 1999, the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers have shared the Staples Center as their home court. However, in December 2021, they announced that the Staples Center's name would be changed to Crypto.com Arena.
Next, one of the most significant financial challenges that Millennials and Generation Z have faced is student loan debt. According to Student Loan Hero, over 46 million Americans have approximately $1.75 trillion in student debt.
Many new organizations, such as the finance startup SoFi, are attempting to overcome our nation's student loan debt. SoFi also won the naming rights to the new NFL stadium being built in Los Angeles in September of 2019. Both the Rams and the Chargers now play their games at SoFi Stadium.
Finally, sports betting is permitted in 18 states. Many sports fans can now gamble from their phones as of the time of this recording, as long as they live in one of these states.
Sports betting has produced more than $8 billion in revenue since June 2018. In addition, the New Orleans Saints announced in July 2021 that they had sold the naming rights to the Mercedes Benz Superdome to Caesars Entertainment. Caesar's Sportsbook is one of the market's largest mobile betting sportsbooks. It is spread throughout 15 states including Washington, DC. As a result, the Saints' home stadium is now known as the Caesars Superdome.
So how else has the new economy affected the sports industry? Can you pick a better name for these stadiums? Let us know in the comments below.
