Despite the fact that graduates who took out student loans earn on average more than those who did not graduate, there are many drawbacks to taking out student loans, which today total over $1.7 trillion.
Too much debt might affect a person's credit and capacity to make investments.
Starting careers off in debt might prevent people from making important life decisions like purchasing a home, starting a family, or attempting to launch a new business.
But if we don't change how higher education operates in America, canceling student debt is useless. Getting rid of student debt merely resets the game until there is another student loan crisis in the future unless we find an alternative way to support education and make it more affordable.
