Malls were once hubs of activity. Shopping wasn't the only focus. Malls were the place to go when you wanted to catch up with friends, look for work, window shop, or meet new people. However, times have evolved.
These three factors are what put an end to mall culture.
One is buying online. You can place orders directly from your phone, eliminating the need to travel anywhere to make a purchase.
Two: outlet malls. If you do need to burn gas on a last minute trip, why would you choose a full price store instead of paying less for last season's outfits. After all, retro styles are always coming back.
Three: Starbucks and the third place. Malls used to be the place for people to be when they weren't at home or work, the third place.
Starbucks killed that when it became the place to meet and hang out. Starbucks may not be the go-to spot anymore, but a culture of using any location with WiFi, food, or drinks as a hangout spot has been developed.
