1:05Now PlayingDowntown areas all around America were devastated in recent years. And now there's a study looking at cell phone activity in city centers, and it found that only a handful have recovered since the pandemic.
Downtowns that still look like the zombie apocalypse hit them include Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Portland, Oregon, and St. Louis. But one stands out among all of these and that’s San Francisco. It's in the middle of a nasty downturn because San Francisco today only has 32% of the cellphone activity that it did in 2020. AKA, it's empty.
That's why many say downtown San Francisco is super scary. Businesses have closed, and Elon Musk constantly complains that Twitter is in a bad neighborhood. Fortunately, some downtowns are doing much better.
Albuquerque, El Paso, Columbus, Ohio, Fresno and Bakersfield, California and Salt Lake City have all completely recovered. In fact, Salt Lake is in a big boom, with 40% more cell phone activity now than in 2020.
