Popular Senate Candidate Wants To Defund And Disarm Police And Civilians

A man running for United States Senate in Michigan looked into a camera and asked whether police officers really need guns.

He’s a doctor.

A Rhodes Scholar.

Oxford educated.

Which proves a very expensive education can still get you all the way to a very bad idea.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed argues that we should invest in public health, schools, and communities rather than policing. And on the surface, that sounds compassionate. It sounds thoughtful. It sounds serious.

But the problem is the word “rather.”

You do not have to choose between investing in communities and having police capable of dealing with violent people.

That choice is fake.

We should absolutely deal with poverty, broken schools, lack of opportunity, and the conditions that produce violence. I’ve been saying that for years. But dealing with the underlying issue does not mean pulling the fire department out of a burning house so you can spend their budget on the foundation.

Boston figured this out with Operation Ceasefire.

Police, probation, prosecutors, clergy, and community leaders all worked the same problem from different angles at the same time.

Not instead of.

Along with.

That’s the answer.

Because here’s the gap nobody wants to talk about:

Even if your community programs work, they do not unmake violent people by Friday.

There are still people out there right now who are armed, violent, and far beyond the reach of a government improvement program. Somebody still has to deal with them.

And if your plan is fewer cops, police without guns, and more restrictions on citizens owning firearms, follow that all the way to the end.

Who is still armed?

Not the police.

Not you.

It’s the scared sixteen-year-old with a switch on his Glock.

That’s not public safety.

That’s a policy fantasy.

Fix the foundation.

Invest in the community.

Create opportunity.

But don’t pretend the fire isn’t burning while you do it.

Deal with the violence and deal with the conditions that produce it.

Both.

At the same time.
