Trintellix (vortioxetine, or Brintellix outside the US) is not just a simple SSRI - in addition to inhibiting serotonin reuptake, it activates the serotonin 1A receptor, and blocks the serotonin -3 and -7 receptors, as well as affecting additional serotonin receptor subtypes. Medications that block serotonin-7 have been associated with improvements in cognitive speed, memory, attention, and other executive functions. Numerous studies show that in those with depression Trintellix more potently improves cognition than do other antidepressants. Trintellix also improves cognition among those with early stages of dementia, whether or not they are depressed.
