If we live long enough, our brains age. But differentiating normal aging from dementia, or from ongoing ADHD, can be particularly tricky. Some aging experts consider all decreases in efficiency or functioning as signs of pathology. Both physical changes (shrinkage of both gray and white matter, alteration in patterns of brain activation) and functional (slower mental processing, memory changes) occur with aging. In general, crystalized intelligence - fixed knowledge like vocabulary, what objects are and how to use them, declines less than does fluid intelligence (flexibility of thought, working memory).
