One of the earliest findings (1888) in neuroscience research was that the tip of the temporal lobe, containing the amygdala, was involved in processing fear and anger in monkeys. For decades the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure that sits immediately in front of the hippocampus, on each side of the brain, has been recognized at intimately involved in the limbic system which generates, regulates and expresses emotions. In particular, the amygdalae integrate the processing of rewards and emotion, and help store emotional memories.
The prefrontal cortex plays a prominent role in symptoms of ADHD, but in recent years brain imaging and activation research has implicated other brain structures, including the amygdala. Although the studies are not completely consistent, those with ADHD appear to have smaller amygdala that differ in how they are connected to other brain regions.
A small number of studies, using different approaches, show that amygdala activity correlates with emotional dysregulation in those with ADHD. Stimulant medications, as well asa EEG-biofeedback treatments, appear to decrease amygdala hyperactivity when they improve emotional processing.
