The conflict primarily involves two main factions: the Houthi rebels, a Shiite minority group from the north that had been marginalized for years, and the Yemeni government led by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, supported by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The conflict can be traced back to the failure of the political transition process after the ousting of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012. The Houthi rebels, dissatisfied with the new government's policies, took control of the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014. This prompted President Hadi to seek international support.
In March 2015, a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE intervened militarily. The conflict has since evolved into a complex and devastating war, marked by widespread humanitarian crises, including famine.
