Sponsored by Sen. David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, the benefit extension would aid iron range minors and other workers laid off due to the decline in U.S. steel sales. Sen. Gary Dahms, R-Redwood Falls, argued that Minnesota businesses should face lower unemployment taxes due to a $1.6 billion dollar surplus in the Unemployment Insurance Fund. His effort to tack on the tax cut, which is supported by House Republicans, failed, and the Senate advanced an unemployment benefit extension on a 62-3 vote.
