18:35Now PlayingThe Senate Republican Caucus revealed their legislative priorities for the 2016 session during a press conference Thursday, March 17. Senate Republican Leader David Hann identified four key policy areas: transportation, tax reform, healthcare and education.
In the area of taxes, Senate Republicans are calling for the elimination of state income taxes on Social Security benefits and veterans receiving a pension. Furthermore, the caucus is calling for the reduction in property taxes on agricultural land.
To boost transportation funding, Senate Republicans propose the dedication of the sales tax on transportation-related items, such as auto part purchases, to a new Transportation Stability Fund. They also propose looking for savings in the MnDOT budget.
In education, Republicans call for the expansion of the current education tax credit and deduction program to allow education savings accounts for low income students and students with special needs. They also are calling for the reinstatement of the graduation requirement for high school students.
To address healthcare issues, Senate Republicans advocate allowing Minnesotans the ability to purchase healthcare plans from a nationwide marketplace. Furthermore, they would allow lower income families to shop for private insurance instead of directing them to state programs.
