16:49Now PlayingThe Senate Judiciary Committee advanced a bill Friday, March 18, that adds bias crimes penalties to felony charges. Under Minnesota law, misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges already carry increased penalties for bias based on race, sexual preference, sex, or religion, but felony charges do not.
In 2015, a Coon Rapids woman was assaulted by a patron at a restaurant for not speaking English with her family. Asma Jama, who speaks three languages, sustained injuries requiring seventeen stiches.
2Because of how current laws are structured, the Anoka County prosecutor did not charge the perpetrator with a hate crime for fear it would have led to conviction on a lesser charge.
