9:24Now PlayingThe Minnesota New American Integration Package was unveiled by Rep. Carlos Mariani, DFL-St. Paul, Sen. Patricia Torres-Ray, DFL-Minneapolis, and supporters representing diverse communities at a press conference on Wednesday, March 30. The package of seven bills, with more to come, seeks to eliminate economic disparities and other unique challenges faced by new immigrants in Minnesota.
One measure would reimburse citizenship application fees for applicants with incomes below the 200 percent poverty level. Another measure would create a task force to recommend steps easing barriers faced by immigrants. Other measures would increase access to grants for higher education, allow undocumented homeowners to file for a homestead tax credit, protect undocumented victims of crimes, provide technical assistance for economically disadvantaged immigrant entrepreneurs and create grants for students with limited or interrupted formal education.
