10:25Now PlayingMinnesota’s prison over-population problem is gaining traction at the Capitol this session. Last year, Senate Judiciary Chair Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park) formed a bi-partisan task force to find both short- and long-term strategies to reduce the prison population. One solution put forward is to re-open the privately owned Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota. Both Senator Latz and Governor Dayton are not in favor of this solution.
Senator Latz noted that the steep increase in the incarceration rate is due to the enactment of stiffer penalties, but that over time, those penalties need some adjustments. The Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission (MSGC) recommendations modify sentences to match those already imposed by judges across the state.
