1:11:29Now PlayingMembers of the Senate Finance Committee debated the merits of a measure to reestablish a Presidential primary in Minnesota. Senator Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope, is sponsoring a measure to allow Minnesota voters the opportunity to vote for a party's presidential candidate rather than select them through caucus meetings, as is presently required.
Minnesota’s recent presidential caucuses caused some unexpected difficulties when throngs of voters turned out to support their preferred candidates. Some Minnesotans could not participate due to long lines and lack of parking. Other Minnesotans could not participate due to the limited hours of a caucus event. Minnesota has toggled back and forth over the years between presidential caucuses and primaries, and the current legislature is considering a move to the presidential primary system once again.
Among the issues raised during the Tuesday, May 3 meeting, Senators questioned the requirement that voters declare whether they will vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary before receiving the appropriate ballot.
The committee did not act on the bill Tuesday, May 3.
