Benefit Insurance Program cleared a major hurdle Tuesday, May 10, when the Senate Tax Committee defeated a motion to remove it from the omnibus tax bill. The proposal, originally proposed by Senator Katie Sieben, DFL-Newport, was rolled into the Senate's 2016 tax bill and will be debated on the floor when the omnibus bill is presented Wednesday, May 11.
Senator Paul Gazelka, R-Baxter, moved to remove the provision, contending that estimates for the state costs to administer the insurance program continue to grow and more time is needed to truly assess the impact to state taxpayers. The measure creates a Family and Medical Leave Benefit Insurance Division to collect taxes from employers and administer benefits to employees needing time away from work to provide family care.
The omnibus tax bill was sent to the floor for final Senate action.
