Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on Earth. They spend most of their lives deep below the surface, diving for giant squid thousands of meters down. From above, you usually see only brief blows or a single animal surfacing.
Seeing a group this size traveling together is especially noteworthy. Female sperm whales and their young form long-term social units, coordinating movement and communication across vast distances. Spotting them from the air allows researchers to document group size, spacing, and behavior without disturbing them. Marine megafauna surveys are just one of the tools that help us better understand biodiversity and migration patterns, informing their protection, conservation, and continued exploration.
