Safe to say this was our version of the Super Bowl.
A century ago, sperm whales were heavily hunted. Today, sightings like this signal something bigger. These animals are returning to parts of the ocean where they were once depleted, and each observation helps scientists understand how ecosystems are recovering and changing.
Sperm whales spend most of their lives diving thousands of meters below the surface hunting squid. Seeing a group this large coming to the surface together is rare, and moments like this help researchers track population recovery, group behavior, and how these animals use open ocean habitats.
