ICE is now the most heavily funded law enforcement agency in the country, expanding through warehouses, leased buildings, and private prison contracts to create space for up to 100,000 people. More than 70,000 immigrants are already detained daily, a scale not seen in decades. Since October, 26 people have died in ICE custody, making this the deadliest fiscal year on record. Reports of overcrowding, lack of food, and unsafe conditions continue to grow. But communities are pushing back—and winning: • In New Hampshire, public pressure forced ICE to abandon a facility • In Oklahoma City, residents blocked a warehouse conversion • In Hutchins, Texas, community action stopped a building sale • In Social Circle, Georgia, leaders cut off water to a planned mega facility Local leaders are also stepping in. Mayors across the country are demanding transparency, health standards, and legal access for people in detention. Public opinion is shifting too. 65% of Americans now say ICE has gone too far, a sharp increase from last year. The message is clear: the government may have billions, but it cannot build detention centers where communities refuse to allow them.
