According to The Open Door Project’s Research Director for the Personnel Team, Max Moran, it’s because AG Garland has immense power but has very conservative (with a lower case c) ideas about how the Justice Department should be run.
Garland seems much more worried about carrying on the traditions of the DOJ, preserving the status quo, and protecting any and all presidential prerogatives, than he is about holding Trump’s depraved and fascistic administration accountable. During a time when people want to see real change and institutional reform, Garland is sweeping things under the rug left and right. Maybe this is just what happens when you elect someone who promised that “nothing will fundamentally change,” but call me crazy for thinking they’d want to hold literally anyone accountable.
Just this week, the extents to which the Trump administration surveilled opponents in the press, as well as Democratic opponents in Congress, has begun to be uncovered. At least two Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, as well as their aides and family members (including one minor) had their personal data subpoenaed in order to carry out anti-leak investigations. It looks unlikely that an Attorney General with instincts like Merrick Garland has the stomach to force the DOJ to reckon with this recent overreach.
