8:37Now PlayingHow can we expect to reign in corporate power when so many top officials come from the corporate world--commonly known as the “revolving door” problem. Should there be ethics and/or diversity standards in executive branch appointments? Why not bring community leaders and organizers, who already interface with these agencies on the local level, to Washington to serve inside organizations like HUD or EPA?
White Houses, and their lawyers, are notoriously good at finding loopholes regarding almost any standards, so that might be a tough nut to crack. Maybe a good place to start is with civil service jobs, which are usually unionized, and staffed by individuals that are actually committed to the organizations that they are part of. With a strengthened civil service, the bench of strong applicants will increase, leading to better executive appointments. We should also fight to diversify the backgrounds of these agencies.
