17:21Now PlayingJoe Manchin taught us a very valuable lesson this week: Build Back Better isn’t about preparing the nation for catastrophic climate change, nor getting healthcare, nor ensuring families don’t fall into poverty, it was actually about all the drama and disappointments in saying no to all of those things.
Manchin, a Democratic Senator from West Virginia and only member of the ruling class who’s all too happy to absorb all the blame, basically doomed President Biden’s agenda by announcing this week that he’d vote against Build Back Better. Democrats had been negotiating with him for months, and this week he told us that he was never really all that serious about ever voting for it. Which everyone except for leading Democrats, including the White House, say that they didn’t see coming. Sure. Pretty much the only ones who knew that Manchin was full of it were Squad members (Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Tlaib, Rep. Omar, Rep. Pressley, Rep. Bowman and Rep. Bush) who all voted against the bipartisan infrastructure in order to try and leverage it to win over Manchina and Sinema. Leverage that by passing it was gone in an instant when the House overwhelmingly passed it.
Negotiations for this bill started roughly two years ago at over $6 trillion, and though persistent rat-f*cking, Manchin was able to whittle it down to $1.75 trillion before shepherding it right into the grave. Why would he do this? Bought and sold by fossil fuel companies and Big Pharma. Trying to make a run at the White House? Sadomasochism, Mommy issues and a God complex? Maybe all of the above.
