12:50Now PlayingAre you changing any of your previous behavior now that Omicron is out there? We found out earlier this month about a new variant that’s sweeping the globe: Omicron. It’s possible (though not yet totally confirmed) that this variant is slightly less deadly than Delta, but it seems to spread 70x as fast, even breaking through those who’ve already been vaccinated.
Initially detected in South Africa, though it was discovered/identified elsewhere at the same point in time, Omicron initially brought panic; the markets tanked, people started preparing to go back into lockdown, and some regions began to reinstitute vaccine mandates, mask mandates, etc etc. In NYC, super spreader events like SantaCon seemed to have super boosted the virus, with cases now rising precipitously across NYC and beyond. It took less than a few weeks for Omicron to go from non-existent to the most common variant of COVID in America. Who knows what the next few weeks will bring.
The lasting impacts of Omicron are still very much in the air, as scientists still aren’t totally settled on how dangerous it might be, but it has already caused a global shake up. In Germany, a full lockdown was reinstated, meanwhile in the U.S. Joe Biden has told folks that they absolutely would not be going back into lockdown even though the administration plans to make rapid test widely available in 2022.
