11:41Now PlayingBiden was finally able to pass a few parts of his Build Back Better agenda through the recent Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), but how does it stack up? The IRA has money to combat climate change, BUT it also has mandates to lease offshore land to oil companies. It raises taxes on corporations and allows Medicare to negotiate drug prices, BUT not until 2026.
For sure this bill makes some progress. But the question is whether the losses make the gains a wash. There are curbs to methane gas emissions, as well as ending the moratorium on offshore wind farms, and subsidies for green energy investment. But the good is paired with stuff that’s bad in equal and opposite ways. Proponents of the bill are calling it the most ambitious climate bill in history, and technically they are correct since this is the FIRST climate change mitigation bill that has passed through Congress in history. But that bar is low, and can the planet afford such compromise?
