As of August 3rd, 2022, 209 Starbucks locations have voted to unionize nationwide, with the vast majority of those being successful for Starbucks Workers United (the upstart Starbucks workers union). This week The Bitchuation Room was joined by Jaz Brisack, a Barista and member of Starbucks Workers United who helped to organize the first unionization effort in Buffalo, NY.
When corporate realized that the threat of unionization was very real in Buffalo, the company brought in Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz to speak to its workers. Schultz had unsuccessfully run for president in 2020 on a benevolent Billionaire platform. The same speeches that failed on Democratic primary voters also failed on these unionizing workers, and according to our guest even knocked some workers off the fence and onto the union’s side.
Schultz reportedly compared the relationship that Starbucks had with its so called “partners” (employees) with the relationship between Jews living under the Nazi regime. When he was later confronted about this, he defended himself by saying that he’s used this anecdote many times and this was the first time people complained.
