Trump dramatically announced the raid on his Florida estate with a press release and post on his own social media website, Truth Social, saying, in part, “they even broke into my safe.” Oh no, what was the combo? 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9?!
It’s not clear yet what the FBI was after, but for the extremely cautious Attorney General Merrick Garland (who, before this, seemed dangerously incapable of holding anyone from the Trump year’s accountable for their lawlessness) to approve this search warrant, and then for a judge to agree to it, means that the Feds are pretty serious about whatever is going on. It was reported today in the Wall Street Journal that a tipster told the Justice Department that Trump was hoarding classified documents he illegally removed from the White House, but who knows what else may be behind this raid.
Republicans have, of course, reacted to the FBI holding a politician accountable for mishandling classified information totally consistently with how they wanted Hillary locked up for her emails. Stephen Crowder said on Twitter that this means war, and the entire Fox Newsroom went into immediate damage control mode, attacking the FBI however possible. Marjorie Taylor Greene even started selling merch demanding that the FBI be “defunded”. To be sure, the FBI is not our friend, and its long history has been defined by its preoccupation with crushing any notion of left-wing organizing, so to see it turned against the former POTUS is objectively pretty rich.
