13:39Now PlayingWhat function do reactionary right-wing comics serve in the conservative movement? According to this week’s guest on the program, Associate Professor of Media Studies at Colorado State University, it’s basically the gateway drug to taking the red pill.
Greg Gutfeld is one such right wing “comedian” at Fox News. His jokes are not good, but they’re good enough, and edgy enough, to attract an audience of irony-poisoned white dudes. They’re transgressive, not aimed at the powerful, but at the most marginalized. In doing so they look edgy and cool because they’re doing the “non-PC”/ “un-woke”/disrespecful thing.
As liberal comedy seemed to have lost its edge under Trump (considering we were living in a giant satire) right-wing comedy stepped up to the plate. Right-wing comedy became a safe space for white guys to say slurs and for anyone trying to take part in the grift to try to say as many inflammatory things as possible in order to trigger the algorithm to pay attention to you. Have we mentioned the algorithm loves this kind of far right trash?
