On October 2nd, one of the largest democracies in the world goes to the ballot box to elect (among other positions) a new president. Representing the extreme right wing of Brazilian politics is Jair Bolsonaro, and representing the Worker’s Party and the left is former President Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro has been a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, abortion, affirmative action, drug liberalization, and has advocated for a larger role for the church in national political affairs. He has let the Amazon rainforest go to the highest bidder and he’s turned his back as wildfires in the most pristine and precious “lungs of the Earth” rage. A former member of the military, he has also been known for his past pro-dictatorship stances, as well as his modern equivocations on the reliability of Brazil’s voting system. In foreign policy, Bolsonaro has advocated for closer relations to the United States, who was the primary backer of Brazil’s anti-democratic military coup in the 20th century, and Israel.
Lula, on the other hand, was one of Brazil’s most popular politicians ever. During his time in office, social services increased tremendously and poverty fell dramatically. It took a thoroughly corrupt judicial system to throw him in jail in order to lessen his influence and reduce his electoral chances in 2016/17 but now he’s back. Can he pull through?
