Surviving As An Artist Within the Algorithm

How do you survive as an artist in a world ruled by algorithms and the “creator” economy? As a content creator, the deal is essentially that you give a bunch of free labor to a bunch of tech companies until something catches fire and then social media starts to make YOU money, not just the other way around. This is a pretty tricky thing to pull off, and by no means is it a sustainable way to think about making the art that moves you, not just the art that you can monetize.

Regardless of the kind of art you may be trying to sell, your online visibility is subject to things that are completely obscure and pretty much out of your hands. Every performer will tell you about a time when a fan told them to go visit the city you performed in last night. Live performances are already a tenuous way to live, and these platforms only serve to exacerbate this constant stress.
