In a race absolutely dominated by Donald Trump, the GOP presidential primary is really just defined by who can try and keep up. The Iowa caucuses, still more than 5 months away, will be the first test to see what candidate will face the former president in further states.
In their appearances at the Iowa State Fair, many candidates found themselves heckled or booed. One asked Mike Pence how he was doing “after Tucker Carlson ruined your career,” while another said “I’m glad they didn’t hang you!” referring to his role, or lack thereof, in Jan 6 insurrection. Pence seems to be looking to set himself apart from Trump and Ron DeSantis by playing nice and polite. However, that leaves him in a distant sixth place in Iowa, according to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll.
Candidates looking to “institute similar policies” to Trump’s, without the legal baggage, seem to be forgetting its drama the GOP voter loves. At the fair DeSantis was similarly frequently humiliated and clowned, despite his strong ground game in Iowa.
Within six weeks of his campaign launch, however, he spent some $8 million, and also laid off more than a third of his roughly 100 staffers, stating that he spending and hiring to fast and too hard in a primary season that will stretch for possibly another year.
Iowa can prove to be an important litmus test for presidential candidates. If you’ll remember Ted Cruz actually won Iowa in 2020, but he was never president.
