Reality TV Stars Demand Better Working Conditions

In a plot twist that even the most dramatic reality TV producers couldn't have predicted, stars of reality TV shows are putting down their roses and picking up picket signs.

Fed up with unsafe workplace conditions and paychecks that barely cover their sparkling outfit budgets, the contestants from Netlfix’s “Love Is Blind” are suing the company and inspiring other reality TV show workers along the way. Cast members told More Perfect Union they were paid only $7.14/hr, kept in a dazed state through psychologically manipulation and alcohol, all while being effectively unable to leave the show.

These efforts for justice come as other reality stars across networks and platforms are starting to make noise about unionizing. Real Housewives alum Bethenny Frankel has been leading the way and in a statement, SAG-AFTRA encouraged reality performers to contact the guild “to engage in a new path to Union coverage.” Like actors concerned with equity in streaming, cast members on Love Is Blind weren’t even offered residual payments.
