There's an app for that?

Since October 2020 Customs and Border Patrol has been using the CBP One™ mobile application to handle border crossings. The app has become the only way that those arriving at the US-Mexico border can be processed to seek asylum. While serving as a portal for those seeking safety in the US, the app has raised concerns about ease of access and biometric and privacy implications.

We spoke of Erika Andiola of the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights about how this app has been affecting those on the border as well as effecting the ‘border crisis’ politically. Immigration officials allow about 40,000 migrants a month to schedule appointments using the app, those caught entering without appointments are held in detention centers and subject to deportation.

Ultimately this summer as CBP One became the primary way in which migrants can seek to gain asylum, the number of migrants illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border is hitting a record low since early 2021, with the Biden administration claiming that as a win. However, it’s clear that the app is simply another way to deter immigration, like razor buoys or a wall, but with a bureaucratic flair.
