Should oil and gas companies be allowed to attend the UN climate summit?
At COP28, the UN climate summit, many activists were left feeling even more hopeless than when the event started. Back in January, Sultan Al-Jaber, the head of the UAE’s national oil company, was appointed as the president of COP28 and many expected going into the conference that the UAE would favor oil interests.
The climate conference was meant to deliberate whether or not to phase out global fossil fuel use and figure out the next steps on climate action. Towards the end of the week, mentions of "phaseout" of fossil fuels in the draft text for the conference had been replaced with the suggestion for a "transition away" from them.
The final adopted text had plenty of carveouts for the oil and gas industry. It calls for scaling down "unabated coal power" and encourages the adoption of "abatement and removal technologies" for carbon dioxide. These technologies allow companies to keep burning fossil fuels if they only balance the scales with unproven carbon capture.
According to climate outlet Grist, 1 in 40 attendees were lobbyists from national governments, business groups, and carbon offset advocates totaling a record-breaking 2,400 lobbyists.
Former Vice President Al Gore declared that the conference was “on the verge of complete failure.” What do you think?
