“Were there no Israel, there wouldn't be a Jew in the world that is safe,” Biden said at the White House Hanukkah party earlier this week.
Did Biden just claim Jews aren’t safe in the US? This is a pretty wild statement to make as the man who governs a country with the second-largest Jewish population in the world, coming in at 7.6 million. And imagine saying this at the White House Hanukkah celebration, having just gone through security, and being watched over by the secret service. Does Biden mean this literally, meaning to cite the “growing” problem of antisemitism? Or does he mean it ideologically, referring tenet of pre-state Zionism that Israel must remain a safe haven for all Jews?
Regardless, it hits on a note familiar to many Jews and others in the diaspora— the idea of not belonging and of displacement from generational trauma. This idea in itself is more antisemitic than students protesting on college campuses. Zionism uses Jews as political pawns, and Biden seems to be playing into the game.
