Some of these unverified claims were recounted as factual by President Biden and many prominent western officials.
The claims were shortly found out to be almost entirely fabricated. In the wake of the attack, misinformation on sexual violence was turned into a powerful argument in favor of the harshest of Israeli retaliation possible, which is exactly what happened.
