32:40Now Playing“Too many people are jumping to too many conclusions about what happened on November 5th.” This week we were joined by activist, author and friend of the show Bill Fletcher Jr. to discuss what lessons he thinks the left, so far as it exists, should learn as we move past the Biden administration and into the second Trump administration.
Inflation hurt the Biden/Harris campaign, and although the economy was improving, people remain upset with the neoliberal status quo of the past 40 years. Both Biden and Harris could not speak to this, as they are unashamedly standard-bearers of neoliberalism. As an outsider, Trump was in a far better position to harness this rising tide of resentment against the ruling class status quo. The policies of the Biden administration were undoubtedly far more progressive than any of those that came before it, but Biden’s project was ultimately hurt by his own inability to definitively break from the past, a problem that Harris suffered from just as much as she was unable to meaningfully differentiate herself from Biden on the campaign trail.
So what comes next? The left remains as scattered as ever, and that’s something that needs to change if we want to build working class power in the United States. Sanders wasn’t all that interested in turning his presidential campaigns into an organization like that, and organizations like DSA and PSL are still quite small. Now more than ever, the left needs organization builders, not just leaders.
