0:52Now PlayingWhen the earthquake of roughly 675 years ago fractured the casing stones of the Great Pyramid, it inadvertently created one of the most useful geological baselines in Egyptology. Areas of the pyramid base that had been sealed under casing stones were suddenly exposed to weathering for the first time. Areas outside those stones had been weathering since the day the pyramid was built. The difference in surface pitting between the two is striking.
Italian engineer Bartolomeo Nini measured that differential across eleven points around the pyramid, comparing pit depth and density against the known 675 year baseline. His results ranged from a minimum of around 10,000 years to a maximum approaching 40,000. Taking the mean across all eleven measurements, he arrived at approximately 23,000 BC. His conclusion was direct - the official archaeological dating of 2,500 BC has a low probability of being correct, and it is plausible that Khufu merely renovated a structure far older than his own dynasty.
