Drunk Girl and Lowlife Boyfriend BOTH Arrested After he Sucker Punches a Random Guy

On August 10, 2025 at approximately 1:56 AM, officers with the Villa Park Police Department were conducting extra patrol outside DeMito’s Saloon at 335 E Kenilworth Avenue. Officers Franco, Simons, Jarzembowski, and Rol Vel Rul, along with Sergeant Landa, were waiting for patrons to leave the bar. Around this time, they heard commotion and observed a physical altercation near Cortesi Park, which is located near the bar. Officers observed 2 male subjects in an a physical struggle, and Officers Simons and Rol Vel Rul immediately subdued the striking subject. He was later identified as 22-year-old Nikodem Smosna.

As Officer Franco rendered aid to the 21-year-old victim, later identified as Ryan, Nikodem’s girlfriend became uncooperative and did not comply with officers’ commands to not interfere. The other woman, later identified as 22-year-old Emily Chappell, was also placed under arrest. First responders with the Villa Park Fire Department arrived on scene to evaluate Ryan, and Officer Jarzembowski spoke with witnesses at the scene.

One of the witnesses, 26-year-old Maura McClintic, told the officers that they were leaving the bar with their friend Ryan, when they heard Nikodem shout that someone named “Ryan” had taken his belongings. They jokingly responded “…this is our friend Ryan.” This eventually transpired into a physical struggle where Nikodem allegedly sucker punched Ryan. Ryan initially declined to be transported to the hospital, but his mother arrived on scene and took him to Elmhurst Hospital. The officers would later determine that Ryan’s injuries were extensive because his nose was broken, he had severe swelling to his face, and his teeth and permanent retainer were displaced.

Emily and Nikodem were transported in separate patrol cars to the Villa Park Police Department for further processing. Emily was processed and charged under 720 ILCS 5/31-1(A)(2) (obstructing officer, firefighter, or correctional employee). Nikodem was processed and charged under 720 ILCS 5/12-3.05(C) (aggravated battery in public place). After they were both processed at the station and advised of their charges, they were released pending their court appearances.
