2:56Now PlayingHarvard has moved to force secretive all-male, off-campus “final clubs” become coed, as well as all-female women’s clubs. Is this a step in the right direction by combatting discrimination and exclusion? Or does it violate students rights to free association? Let us know what you think and subscribe for new videos every week!
Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious universities. It's also known for its exclusive "final clubs," all-male societies rumored to be bastions of privilege and power for the most well-heeled students: the Pelican, the Phoenix SK, the Owl and the Fly, the Porcellian, A.D. Club, and Delphic Club.
Recently, Harvard administration has ruled that starting with the class of 2021, students who join these groups will be ineligible for leadership roles in school clubs, athletics, or for dean recommendations for top scholarships like the Rhodes and Fulbright. Harvard president Drew Faust has made it clear that this will also apply to all-female clubs, like the Pleiades society - drawing protests from members like Caroline Tervo who insist that in a male-dominated society, female-only places are essential. Others argue that the first amendment guarantees a right to free association that should not be infringed by the college retaliating against people who join private organizations. What do you say?
