While school segregation has been illegal since Brown vs. the Board of Education, a surprising amount of schools are still racially homogenous since they serve racially homogenous zip codes. This has left many poorer minority students stuck in underperforming schools - particularly in New York City. John Oliver devoted an episode to calling out white liberals for their part in this problem, but he ignores an obvious solution that many students already have some access to: school choice, allowing parents to pick whichever school - charter, public, etc. - that provides the best opportunities for their kids regardless of its zip code.
