Time Magazine Names Jailed and Killed Journalists As Person of the Year. Are They Totally Innocent?

Time Magazine has named journalists who have been killed, jailed, or nearly jailed for various reasons as their “2018 Person of the Year.” The Editor of the Magazine wrote a brief piece explaining the decision making process behind this and of course, Trump’s name was mentioned. Jamal Khashoggi is arguably the most recognizable face featured on one of four covers Time Magazine has produced this year. Since Trump was mentioned in the explanation for the covers and Jamal Khashoggi was used, deductive reasoning would say that the magazine is sending a message to Trump and his followers. To leave the media alone.

Most people aren’t going to defend the harassment, unjust jailing, or slaying of journalists for simply reporting information. However, one thing that can’t be ignored is how powerful journalists are and the need for them to respect the power that they have.

Many a time an average man has come under fire or had his life ruined by journalists eager to jump the gun for the sake of money or political bias. Case after case after case has been brought before judges and ruled on in favor of the accusing party when it comes to media harassment of common citizens. The Duke Lacrosse Case, the UVA Case, attacks against conservatives, the list goes on. Libel and slander are real offenses and while they rarely land people in jail, they do carry heavy penalties.

Journalists are made out to be innocent people who never do any wrong by Time Magazine in their “Person of the Year” story. That is simply not true. Just because that fact is reality does not take away from their main point about journalists needing to be protected. At the end of the day, this is a two way street and both sides need to abide by the rules of traffic.
