7:52Now PlayingA Honduran migrant recently hopped the border wall at San Diego and gave birth to an anchor baby less than 24 hours later. The nineteen year old woman travelled with the infamous “migrant caravan” for two months with her husband and two year old son. They were in a Tijuana camp for a while before they decided to hop the wall for the purpose of delivering the baby.
Once a child is born on US soil, that makes them a US citizen according to most interpretations of the 14th Amendment. These children are labeled as anchor babies because since you cannot deport the child, most of the family gets to stay or has a higher case for staying. Not only does the immediate family stay, there is also a chance to bring over other family members from their country of origin. Having an anchor baby is like a winning lottery ticket to many people.
Trump has called for an end to anchor babies and also chain migration, which is the aforementioned process of bringing extended family over. There are abundant skeptics to this method since it’s difficult to circumvent the constitution in any way, especially with executive orders. But something has to be done. Whether it be a reinforced and tall border wall, no more VISAs, something. Because others will see this woman give birth to anchor baby, released into the interior of the country, and live in the US for the rest of their lives without going through the immigration process. It must stop!
