13:36Now PlayingDonald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer had a tense debate in front of cameras at the White House over funding for the border wall. Trump wants about $5 billion in funding while the respective House & Senate minority leaders Pelosi and Schumer want to give him $1.3 billion which is the same as last year. The lower sum of money does not account for building the wall. It’s just for added “fencing and security.”
At first, the highly public debate between the two sides was supposed to be done in private. But at a certain point, plans were changed and it became public. One thing people were able to see is how the debate and/or negotiation process works in Government. Chuck Schumer was identified clearly as the Senate Majority leader who is responsible for getting Trump to the 60 Senate votes needed to pass a $5 billion dollar border wall funding bill. Pelosi was identified as the House Minority leader and impending Speaker of the House who must say certain things to protect her viability for her potential new position.
A major point this debate focused on was the prospect of a Government shutdown. Pelosi pointed it out as a “Trump shutdown,” essentially blaming the President for any disruptions in Government resulting from a dispute over border wall funding. Trump said he wouldn’t mind taking responsibility for that if it meant getting wall funding. Pelosi said that since Trump has the house right now that he should present the vote to them and let it go to the Senate. Trump correctly pointed out that he would not have 60 votes in the Senate so there would be no purpose in doing so.
It appears as if the left wants Trump to put the vote out there so it can reach the Senate, get stonewalled, and watered down in order to pass it. That’s not a solution Trump wants nor do the American people who support the wall.
