9:41Now PlayingPresident Trump has temporarily reopened the government after a 34 day shutdown, the longest in history. He agreed to sign a deal that provides government funding for three weeks that does not include border wall funding. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer said there would be no border “security” or wall negotiations until Trump reopened the Government. Now that the government is open, negotiations should begin. If they don’t, then Trump now has a stronger case to invoke a National State of Emergency to pull funds from FEMA and the Pentagon to fund building of the wall by the US military.
Some political pundits have referred to this move as a “cave.” In reality, Trump did not have much of a choice. If he did not re-open the Government, then the Democrats were not going to negotiate at all and allow it to stay closed indefinitely. 800,000 federal employees were directly affected by the shutdown. Not to mention the countless others that depend on Government funding to conduct their various businesses. It would have been a bad mark on the right and Trump himself with no wall coming as a result.
If the Democrats do not negotiate and renege on their initial agreement to do so, then Trump has a stronger case for the National State of Emergency, which will be challenged in court. It will most likely be blocked at the lower courts and over a period of time, make it to the high court in which it will be upheld due to the conservative/liberal balance in the court which is in favor of the right. But the case had to be made first.
