11:50Now PlayingSuper Bowl 53 was supposed to be about the actual football game between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. But of course, controversy over social justice and other ancillary things surrounding the game took the front seat and most of the attention. There was plenty of outrage to spare. But most of it was purposeless virtue signalling and not much more.
Rapper Cardi B made controversial statements about the NFL halftime show, saying that she refuses to perform to “stand with” Colin Kaepernick. However, she did perform during an official Super Bowl party the day before. She even danced on stage with Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft. Then, on the day of the big game, she appeared in a Pepsi Super Bowl commercial alongside fellow rapper Lil’ Jon. Fun fact, Pepsi also was the big sponsor of the halftime show itself.
During the halftime show, Maroon 5, rapper Travis Scott, and Atlanta native Big Boi of the rap group Outkast performed. Travis Scott and Big Boi had pretty uneventful performances, but when Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine took his shirt off to perform, the internet spiraled into a myriad of think pieces. They all basically pointed out “hypocrisy” in his nipples being OK to show on television, but not Janet Jacksons. Which is in reference to the infamous incident between her and singer Justin Timberlake during a past Super Bowl halftime show performance.
Most of the outrage was centered around Colin Kaepernick who barely ever even speaks for himself but is lauded as some type of black leader. Rapper Jay-Z advises people to boycott the NFL to support Kaepernick, but the actual end game is as clear as mud. Jay-Z has clients that play for the NFL who employ his marketing firm - Roc Nation. His wife Beyonce has two artists, CholexHalle, who performed on television right before kickoff and before Gladys Knight who also got flack for singing the national anthem. None of the virtue signalling and outrage makes a lick of sense. From the male cheerleaders to the hypocritical appearances in NFL related events. It is Los Angeles / Hollyweird politics on a national stage.
