Should Congress Have Term Limits?

Does creating term limits ensure the prevention of an abuse of political power, or does wanting it mean you’re a lazy American?

The 2020 elections (including the Georgia runoff election in January) were, to say the very least, unprecedented. And to that end, many of the elected officials ran for offices that do not have term limits.

Should they?

In this Millennial Minute, host Julia Sun is joined by Hilary Levey Friedman, author of “Here She Is”, who believes that we should give political positions (like US Congress or Supreme Court Justices) term limits, and by Christian Watson, host of “Pensive Politics” podcast, who believes that giving term limits is just missing the point.

Friedman states that there should be a balance, and that an elected official should have term limits, but the term limits should be long enough to have time in office to understand how their job works and how the government works enough to do their job effectively.

Watson says that if you don’t like what your elected official is doing then you can give them a term limit by just voting them out of office during the next election. Giving term limits makes the American people complacent to who is representing them in public office, and when you’re living in a republic, they work for you. So let them know.
