1. Daymond John, founder of FUBU - From selling 80 hats he made in his mother’s home in Queens, New York and persuading his mother to remortgage their home to repurpose half of the home into a factory for apparel, John worked his way up to the successful world-wide clothing brand we know today. John is also an investor on ABC’s Shark Tank.
2. Dave L Steward, founder of World Wide Technology - the technology service provider was founded in 1990, and is now the top US reseller for Cisco with more than 70 of the top Fortune 100 companies as its customers. From its success, Steward is one of the 5 black billionaires in America.
3. Oprah Winfrey, talk show host/producer/author/the list goes on! - We are all familiar with Oprah’s success as a media personality, and how she was turned down so many times until she landed her first break in Tennessee. But through her company, Harpo Productions, Oprah was able to control her own show and introduce a rather new approach to media at the time. Instead of just being paid as talent, Oprah was able to get ownership of her show and gain access to more of the show’s profits. After her show ended, Harpo lives on as a multimedia production company with other ventures in magazines and radio.
